"Climate change mitigation and adaptation is one of the priority issues that must become the concern of all countries without exception," Karnawati noted in a statement received here, Monday.
The BMKG head cautioned that the impact of climate change is a threat to the availability of water resources, food security, safety from hydrometeorological disasters, and the welfare of all human beings in the world.
During the Diplomatic Reception at the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore on May 12, Karnawati shed light on her vision -- "Realizing Weather-Climate and Ocean for Common Prosperity and Resilience of the World Community" -- that she intends to realize.
In order to fufill this vision, she carries at least four missions, with the first being to continue to strengthen the Global Basic Observing Network (GBON) by supporting the development of human resource capacity and infrastructure in member countries.
Especially for quality earth system observations, the focus is on improving the quality and accessibility of data and information on weather, climate, water, and other environmental services, delivered in an authoritative manner to be timely, reliable, and accurate as well as to be accessible, user-oriented, and fit for purpose.
Secondly, Karnawati intends to continue to strengthen and/or accelerate the development of early warning for all. Her third area of focus is to continue to facilitate partnerships and collaboration to mobilize resources to support the infrastructure and capacity development of member countries, including by increasing the achievements of the Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF) Program.
Karnawati's fourth priority is to continue to encourage the development of appropriate technology by taking into account local and customary knowledge, technology and/or wisdom to support early warning and early action in Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
Karnawati is nominated as WMO President for the 2023-2027 period. Her candidacy is the nomination of the first female candidate as WMO President in history.
The election for WMO President for the 2023-2027 period will be held at the session of the Nineteenth World Meteorological Congress (CG-19) on May 22-June 2, 2023. The President of the WMO is elected by majority vote by WMO members comprising 197 countries and six territories.
Meanwhile, Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore Suryo Pratomo highlighted Indonesia's keenness and commitment to contribute to strengthening the WMO leadership in order to improve human welfare in the world.
"With her impressive credentials, integrity, experience, contribution, and vision, the Indonesian government believes that Mrs Karnawati will ensure Indonesia's constructive and active role in WMO," Pratomo noted.
