Bengkulu City, Bengkulu (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister of Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD has asked Indonesians to respond to political differences among each other lightheartedly, instead of with hostility, ahead of the 2024 General Elections.

"I understand each of you has your preference. It is fine, but let us face it lightheartedly and not become hostile (with each other). Healthy competition is good, but we should understand each other to avoid any issues," Mahfud stated.

The coordinating minister made the remarks on a video broadcast during the inauguration ceremony of Bengkulu Province's Islamic University of Indonesia Alumni Union on Tuesday (June 6).

Mahfud noted that he intended to deliver his remarks directly, but was unable to do so as he must accompany President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on his visits to Singapore and Malaysia.

Different political preferences among individuals are common in democracies, he said.

However, norms and regulations should be observed while expressing support, and no one should hinder others from doing so.

"I remember a message about politics and democracy conveyed by Gus Dur: You can disagree, and not support an individual, but you should never hinder their rights to express their opinion and stance," he said, while referring to the late former president, Abdurrahman Wahid.

Though having different political preferences, Mahfud said that all parties shared the same commitment, which is to select the best individuals to be national and regional leaders and legislators.

"Our goal is the same, which is to select the best. Hence, we need to support everyone who is voted in at elections," the coordinating minister stated.

He also highlighted the need to preserve the nation and not allow the interest of an individual or a group to disrupt the country.
