Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Religious Affairs Ministry affirmed that Indonesian regular Hajj pilgrims are protected by insurance during their Hajj pilgrimage, starting from the time they enter the Hajj dormitory until they arrive in Indonesia after Hajj.

"If Hajj pilgrims die after being admitted to the (Hajj) dormitory, then they are eligible for the insurance according to the Hajj travel fee they paid. If they are involved in an accident, there will be a percentage to calculate the insurance claim depending on the severity," according to the ministry's Director of Domestic Hajj Service, Saiful Mujab, here on Friday.

Mujab remarked that Hajj pilgrims, who died aboard flights, are eligible for additional insurance cover amounting to Rp125 million (US$8,375).

He explained that while pilgrims, who died in Hajj, are eligible for insurance claims equal to the Hajj fee they had paid, those pilgrims, who lost their lives in an accident, are eligible to receive double the Hajj travel fee.

Hajj pilgrims, who suffer permanent injury in Hajj accidents, are eligible to claim their insurance proportional to their injuries at the rate of 2.5 percent to 100 percent of their Hajj fee, he noted.

The director expounded that the insurance claim process will be carried out by the ministry's Directorate General of Hajj and Umrah and the claimed insurance fund will be transferred directly to the pilgrims' banking account.

Mujab underscored that the Hajj insurance will cover pilgrims from their entry up to the Hajj dormitory before they depart for Saudi Arabia until their return to Indonesia.

"This is (part of) our efforts to protect Hajj pilgrims," the ministry director stressed.

During the period from May 24 to June 8, 2023, some 100,001 Indonesian Hajj pilgrims, divided into 263 flight groups, arrived in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, as of Friday, at 1 a.m. Jakarta time, as many as 46,341 pilgrims had been transferred from Medina to Mecca to continue their Hajj rituals there.
