Surabaya, East Java (ANTARA) - The East Java provincial authority is contemplating on providing scholarship assistance for Palestinian students to study in the province following the visit of Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia, Zuhair Al-Shun, here.

East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa received the ambassador's visit at Grahadi Building here on Tuesday (June 13) evening.

"One of the agenda (priorities) of Ambassador Al-Shun's visit to East Java is to seek cooperation opportunities in the education aspect to ensure Palestinian children will not drop out from schools," Parawansa noted, as per the press statement here, Wednesday.

The governor remarked that the provincial authority will organize a follow-up meeting between Al-Shun and rectors of several universities in East Java to discuss scholarships for Palestinian students.

"God Willing, we will follow up by (hosting) a breakfast meeting on June 15 with university rectors in East Java, for which one of the agendas is to discuss the potential of scholarship assistance for Palestinian students," the governor stated.

Parawansa noted that the ambassador had also visited Yogyakarta and Makassar in South Sulawesi to explore potential cooperation in the education sector.

"There have been several students from Palestine (studying) in Surabaya, but he hoped a formal agreement can be signed," she stated.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Al-Shun said that Palestine is committed to engaging in cooperation in the education sector with several universities in Surabaya and other cities in Indonesia.

He noted that the Palestinian education minister is expected to visit Indonesia later to sign several memoranda of understanding on cooperation with varsities in Indonesia.

The ambassador also commended the persistence shown by the Indonesian government and people in supporting the Palestinians' struggle for independence.
