"Education wields a strategic role in efforts to tackle radicalism," Mahfud said while delivering his remarks at the V National Coordination Meeting of Nahdlatul Ulama Teachers Association in Majalengka district, West Java, on Saturday.
All related parties need to take holistic and integrated measures in their efforts to tackle radical movements that could threaten the harmony of the country's religious life, the minister added.
"Teachers have a crucial responsibility to enlighten the young generations so that they have truthful religious comprehension, while upholding the values of tolerance," Mahfud said.
The former Constitutional Court Chief Justice stressed the urgent need for strengthening cooperation between the government, educational institutions, and the society for developing a conducive educational environment.

Furthermore, the minister also pushed for the adoption of a curriculum that focuses on character education, national values, and balanced religious knowledge.
In his speech, he said that all parties must build a strong understanding of the nature of religion and boost a sense of mutual respect in order to maintain diversity and show greater respect for religious differences.
"Such practices will result in the emergence of young generations with a noble character who will uphold the value of religious tolerance," he added.
He also reiterated the government's commitment to providing protection to all Indonesian citizens to freely practice their religions and beliefs.
Mahfud expressed the belief that efforts to tackle radicalism are not the responsibility of the security apparatus alone, but all elements of the nation should work hand in hand to fulfill the responsibility.
