"We started the meeting at 1 p.m. and after this, we will have another group meeting," Mahfud said during a press conference at the ministry's office.
He explained that the Law Reform Acceleration Team was created to address the many legal problems found in the fields of justice and law enforcement sectors, including land and agrarian affairs, natural resource management, corruption, and the formation of legislation.
However, Mahfud emphasized that the Law Reform Acceleration Team does not discuss each of the cases, but rather long-term solutions to these problems.
"This team will produce an academic manuscript and drafts of laws and regulations, but the results will still be shared with the authorized institutions," the minister said.
The draft laws produced by the team will then be included in the national legislation program, he added, as he is serving as the director of the acceleration team.
The team, whose work period ends on December 31, 2023, will discuss priority agendas, identify legal issues, and make recommendations for legal improvements in Indonesia.
"Furthermore, the results of this team's work will be submitted to the President forhis consideration," he said.
There are three categories of recommendations that the Law Reform Acceleration Team will make.
The first is short-term, in which recommendations are valid until the end of the team's work period at the end of the year.
The second is recommendations that are valid until the end of the office term of President Joko Widodo and Vice President Ma'ruf Amin in 2024, and the third are comprehensive recommendations.
"Comprehensive recommendations are policies to be implemented by the next government," Mahfud said.
The acceleration team consists of a director, chair, deputy chair, secretary, and four working groups.
