Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - The Mappi administration in South Papua Province has handed over seven cows to the district's Islamic Festivities Organizing Committee (PHBI) to be slaughtered for Qurbani during the days of Eid al-Adha.

The PHBI will distribute the Qurbani animals to several mosques to be slaughtered when local Muslims celebrate the Islamic festivity that likely falls on June 29, according to acting Mappi District Head Michael Gomar.

The Qurbani animals would be distributed to mosques in Kepi Town and the neighborhoods of Haju, Etji, Senggo, Mur, and Bade, Gomar noted in a press statement that ANTARA quoted here, Wednesday.

"We are thankful for the support of Muslim communities in Mappi for the government's programs," he remarked.

Head of the PHBI-Mappi Office Eko Pambudi said he highly lauded the district government for handing over the Qurbani cattle to several mosques to be slaughtered on the day Muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha.

"The Qurbani animals will be slaughtered on June 29," he said.

Qurbani is the religious sacrifice of cattle, goats, or sheep that is made after the Eid al-Adha prayers.

With regard to Qurbani animals, ANTARA reported earlier that the National Zakat Agency (Baznas) has set a target of obtaining a total value of Rp13 trillion (US$866.8 million) from collected Qurbani animals this year.

The agency's Head for Collection Rizaludin Kurniawan said recently that the agency managed to collect Qurbani animals -- sheep or goats -- with the value totaling Rp10.5 trillion (US$700 million) in 2022 and will continue to increase the figure.

"The figure (Rp10.5 trillion) is equivalent to 3.5 million heads of goat. This year, we expect the figure to be increased by 30 percent, or reaching Rp13 trillion nationwide," he noted.

The Qurbani animals that Baznas collects are managed and distributed in the form of living animals as well as processed products.

As for processed meat products, the agency distributes them to the country's disadvantaged, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions in an endeavor to help the government prevent the rise of stunting cases by fulfilling the children's nutritional needs, he remarked.
