Indonesia lies in a disaster-prone region, so we have to anticipate the effects, including by building disaster-resistant infrastructures for schools.Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Lestari Moerdijat has emphasized the importance of prioritizing high-quality and disaster-resistant infrastructures in building educational facilities and infrastructures in Indonesia.
"Indonesia lies in a disaster-prone region, so we have to anticipate the effects, including by building disaster-resistant infrastructures for schools," she said in a statement received in Jakarta on Wednesday.
According to studies conducted by the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and the World Bank, as many as 75 percent of schools in Indonesia are situated in disaster-prone areas, she added.
With that in mind, related stakeholders must take follow-up action based on the studies by developing proper and accurate plans because schools serve as places for the nation's next generation to study, improve their thinking ability, and inculcate virtuous morals, the deputy speaker said.
Moerdijat also called for all-out efforts to ensure the security and comfort of students, including by providing reliable school facilities and infrastructures that are resistant to disasters.
Furthermore, she highlighted data provided by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), which outlines that in the 2021–2022 academic year, Indonesia experienced an increase in cases involving damage to school facilities.
Hence, she asked policy makers to pay close attention to the quality and maintenance of public facilities and infrastructures, including schools, in order to provide a sense of security and comfort to the next generation in their studies.
The politician then expressed the hope that all related parties would correctly and transparently carry out development in the education sector, in accordance with the agreed planning.
Such development is of the essence to support the country's efforts to produce tough and high-quality human resources through the education sector, she said.
