Padang, West Sumatra (ANTARA) - A fall in the prices of air freight, jengkol (Archidendron pauciflorum), petai (Parkia speciosa), and green chili was responsible for the monthly deflation recorded in West Sumatra in June 2023, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) has informed.

In June, on a month-to-month (m-to-m) basis, a 0.03 percent deflation was recorded in Padang and a 0.09 percent inflation was observed in Bukittinggi city, the head of Statistics Indonesia-West Sumatra, Sugeng Arianto, informed in Padang on Monday.

"On aggregate aspect, combination of two cities, those being Padang and Bukittinggi in West Sumatra, there is a month-to-month deflation of 0.03 percent," he said.

Air freight was the top cause of deflation in June, with freight rates declining 11.02 percent, which contributed 0.22 percent to deflation, whereas the price of jengkol slid by 23.60 percent, contributing 0.06 percent to deflation, he explained.

The price of petai also fell by 14.44 percent, contributing 0.03 percent to the total deflation rate, and green chili prices dropped by 11.21 percent, contributing 0.01 percent, he added.

The commodities that contributed to m-to-m inflation in West Sumatra in June included oil, which contributed 0.06 percent; coconut and gold jewelry, which contributed 0.03 percent each; and chub mackerel, mackerel tuna, and beef, which contributed 0.01 percent each to the overall rate, he said.

Meanwhile, chicken meat, whose price increased 11.33 percent, bumped up inflation by 0.16 percent, and chili, whose price climbed by 8.56 percent, pushed inflation up by 0.08 percent.

Then, skipjack tuna and house rent or contract contributed 0.02 percent each to inflation, while the prices of cars, garlic, green beans, celery, and carrots contributed 0.01 percent.

"On increase in price, the highest is for celery, which is at 24.20 percent, green beans at 15.12 percent, carrots at 10.30 percent, and garlic increased by 7.35 percent," Arianto elaborated.

In June, on a month-to-month basis, Padang city ranked first among 12 Indonesian cities that experienced deflation, whereas Bukittinggi city ranked 57th out of 78 cities that recorded inflation, he underlined.

He drew attention to the two consecutive months of inflation in West Sumatra on a month-to-month basis, with the figure recorded at 0.09 in March and 0.03 in April. West Sumatra experienced inflation of 0.38 percent in May and deflation of 0.03 percent in June, he added.
