Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has asked political parties and the General Elections Commission (KPU) to ensure that information dissemination and campaigns for the 2024 General Elections are disabled-friendly.

Providing an example, Komnas HAM deputy head Pramono Ubaid Tanthowi said that one of the efforts that can be made is adding sign language interpretation in video content.

He delivered the statement during a talk show entitled "Human Rights-Friendly General Elections, What Are the Requirements?" The talk show was aired on the Berita KBR YouTube channel on Wednesday.

So far, materials prepared for the dissemination of election-related information and campaigns have relied on people's ability to see, for example, posters and banners, which are not accessible to the blind, Tanthowi highlighted.

To this end, he asked political parties and the KPU to develop creative ideas so that the content that they make is accessible to people living with disabilities.

According to him, the dissemination of information regarding the implementation of the general elections is still very limited.

"Not all of our community, not only in rural areas, but also in urban areas, have been informed of electoral information by the government, election organizers, and political parties," he noted.

For that reason, information dissemination regarding the implementation of the general elections is a task for the KPU and political parties as the main stakeholders.

The General Elections are scheduled to take place on February 14, 2024.

The KPU announced 18 political parties participating in the elections on December 14, 2022.

Currently, the political parties are undergoing the verification process regarding the legislative member candidates at the central and regional levels as well as the candidates for the Regional Representative Council (DPD).

Meanwhile, registrations for presidential and vice presidential candidates will be opened in October 2023. The political campaigning period will be from November 28, 2023, to February 10, 2024.
