"I visited the psychosocial support tent established by the East Java Social Office. Many children are receiving trauma healing assistance there," said East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa during her visit to the evacuation center in the district on Sunday.
During the visit, she distributed 200 packages of staple goods and provided special assistance to the elderly and breastfeeding mothers.
The governor also engaged with the children, asking them about their aspirations for the future.
The children enthusiastically responded, expressing their dreams of becoming police officers, soldiers, and firefighters.
"That's wonderful! Study hard, and hopefully, your dreams will be granted by God," Parawansa said.
She also distributed toys and school supplies to the children.
"Hopefully, this disaster will be resolved soon, and the children can return to school and resume their normal activities," she commented.
To ensure the availability of food for the evacuees, Parawansa visited the public kitchen established by the East Java Social Office.
She discussed logistics and food preparation processes with the staff.
They mentioned that they prepare 3,000 servings of food daily to provide the evacuees with three meals a day.
Parawansa also expressed her condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives in the landslide in Lumajang. She offered compensation of Rp30 million (approximately US$1,978) to the heirs.
She urged the public not to worry, assuring them that all necessary provisions have been prepared.
"Please, do not panic, but remain vigilant. Your safety is a priority at this time, so please follow the instructions given by the authorities," she added.
According to data from the East Java Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) as of July 9, 2023, a total of 1,038 residents have been displaced due to the cold lava flood from Mt. Semeru and landslides in Lumajang District.
