Jakarta (ANTARA) - Chief Deputy II of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), Abetnego Tarigan, has stated that regional governments must directly monitor registrations for New Student Admissions Selection (PPDB) based on the zoning method to prevent fraud.

PPDB based on the zoning method is a public school enrollment method intended for prospective students (CPDB) who are domiciled according to the zoning area determined by the local government.

"KSP also encourages the enforcement of existing regulations to accelerate the improvement of PPDB implementation through the zoning method," Tarigan stated in a statement received here on Wednesday.

According to him, the implementation of zoning-based PPDB should not only focus on data administration but also include efforts to verify student data in the field.

Tarigan said the efforts made by Bogor Mayor Bima Arya could serve as a good example for other local governments.

Regulations in regions also need to be strengthened to implement zoning-based PPDB, he added.

He further explained that the technical mechanism for implementing zoning-based PPDB falls under the authority of the local government through the education service.

The central government, in this case, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, will only regulate the main regulations as the basis for program implementation, he explained.

Regarding indications of fraud in the implementation of zoning-based PPDB, he said that fraud must be suppressed, not the system.

"If we find fraud, we must suppress it, not the system," he emphasized.

Tarigan said that PPDB based on the zoning method is part of the government's effort to equalize the quality of education and reduce educational disparities.

Currently, the number of public schools at lower education levels is larger than at higher levels, he said.

To balance these numbers, local governments must be committed to providing equity and building new schools according to education levels, Tarigan said.

"Our efforts in education must not stop at the zoning method," he added.

Since March 2023, KSP has been monitoring the implementation of PPDB in public schools as well as public Islamic schools.

Several recommendations have also been submitted to the Ministry of Education and Culture, including improving the IT system, ensuring strict supervision by the local government, equal distribution of schools, and encouraging the PPDB process without allowing extortion, he informed.
