Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - Indonesian Ambassador to Papua New Guinea (PNG) Andriana Supandi revealed that the Indonesian state electricity firm PT PLN has deployed its officers to build electricity networks in Sandaun Province of PNG.

"Various supporting equipment, including electricity poles, have been transported to that country," he said when contacted by ANTARA from here on Thursday.

According to him, PLN Jayapura officers have started building electricity networks from Wutung to Vanimo in PNG, which directly borders the city of Jayapura, Papua.

The electricity network construction is based on the Indonesia-PNG cooperation commitment, signed by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) during his visit to Port Moresby on July 5, 2023.

The electricity network construction in the border region is scheduled to be completed in August.

"The provision of electricity to the PNG region is served via the Holtekamp electric power plant," Supandi added.

He noted that Holtekamp electric power plant can generate up to 150 megawatts (MW) of power, while the needs in Jayapura and its surrounding areas are 96 MW.

"The rest (of the power generated) will be sold to PNG," he said.

Earlier, on July 14, PLN established cooperation with PNG Power to supply electricity to Wutung, a village bordering Papua.

On the occasion, PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo and PNG's Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso discussed the electricity supply plan.

The cooperation was a follow-up to President Widodo's bilateral visit to PNG in July.

Prasodjo said that PLN can supply additional electricity needs in the border area by using the electric power transmission and distribution network in Skouw, Jayapura.

Meanwhile, Rosso said the cooperation will strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries and also benefit the people.

PNG is open to cooperation in providing electricity, which is expensive, he added.
