"Batteries are paramount and constitute the technological key toward the realization of net-zero emissions," BRIN's advanced material researcher, Evvy Kartini, said in a statement received in Jakarta on Tuesday.
By supporting the production of batteries, Indonesia would be able to further promote the use of renewable energy and electric vehicles, which, in turn, would help the country achieve the NZE target, the researcher explained.
She said Indonesia has enormous potential to achieve the target, given that the country is rich in mineral resources, such as nickel, manganese, and cobalt, which are required to produce batteries.
As per a survey of online motorbike taxi drivers in South Tangerang City, Banten Province, the conversion of conventional fossil fuel-based motorbikes into battery-based electric vehicles has provided economic as well as environmental benefits, she informed.
The Indonesian Government has issued Presidential Regulation No. 55 of 2019 concerning the acceleration of battery-based electric vehicle programs, demonstrating its commitment to taking concrete actions against global warming by striving to reduce domestic carbon emissions.
The government is aiming to put 14 million battery-based electric vehicles on the nation's roads by 2030.
Another BRIN researcher, Indah Primadona, said that the use of fossil-based energy is still high, while its production rate has declined over time.
Therefore, she stressed that it is important to develop renewable energy and promote its use to fulfill the ever-increasing global need for energy.
