Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Government will use electric vehicles (EVs) to transport delegates during the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Secretary of the Ministry of State Secretariat Setya Utama has informed.

Besides reducing air pollution, the use of EVs is also aimed at demonstrating Indonesia's commitment to pushing for net-zero emissions (NZE), he said.

"We have prepared a line-up of electric cars for country leaders and other delegates. Country leaders will use a BMW i7," Utama disclosed at the "Merdeka Barat 9 Forum: Road to ASEAN Summit" in Jakarta on Friday.

He said that his party has agreed to cooperate with several electric car companies to make the international event a success.

He said 24 BMW i7 cars in total will be deployed for the leaders while 76 Toyota Bz4X vehicles will be provided for ministers and high officials, and 52 Hyundai Ioniq 6 vehicles will be used to ferry senior officials and VVIP guest reserves.

Next, 208 Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles will be deployed for protocol and security, and 150 Wuling AirEVs will be used as operational vehicles, he added.

Through cooperation between the Ministry of Transportation and Jakarta Transportation Service, state guests will also get to ride the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and electric shuttle buses that have been prepared to transport them to and from the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), the venue for the event, Utama said.

"The shuttle buses are also electric. We will use electric TransJakarta buses with low decks to transport the state guests," he added.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) is scheduled to chair 12 meetings during the 43rd ASEAN Summit, which will take place from September 5 to September 7, 2023.

The summit will begin in a plenary and retreat format on September 5, and will be followed by a meeting between ASEAN and partner countries, which will last until September 7.

The East Asia Summit and ASEAN Plus Three Summit will also be held on the last day.

Bilateral meetings between countries' leaders will also take place on the sidelines of the summit.
