Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Communications and Informatics (Menkominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi has reminded the public to join in efforts to protect Indonesia's data sovereignty, especially in the financial sector, amid global digitalization.

According to Setiadi, financial data is important for every country, therefore, Indonesia is supporting the discussion of data security in the digital field at G20 India 2023.

"I have discussed with several people, the Indonesian data that we have to protect, namely the financial data, must be in Indonesia. Because our financial data is vital, all countries in the world, when something happens, they must look at financial data. Things that we must know, don't let other countries know," he said in a statement received on Monday.

Setiadi further said that discussions on data security were also carried out by Indonesia during its 2022 G20 Presidency through the Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG).

At the time, Indonesia had emphasized the issue of cross-border data flow and data free flow with trust to demonstrate the important role of data in tapping digital economic opportunities while abiding by the principles of transparency, legitimacy, fairness, and reciprocity.

At G20 India 2023, the same issue has again been raised by Japan, which has proposed the concept of data free flow with trust or trust-based data exchange.

"Japan proposes data free flow with trust. So the data flows freely, but we want to use it the same (based on) trust, because Japan is always ahead of several countries because they have values similar to Asia and the East," the minister said.

The DEWG G20 India 2023 will focus on three issues: building digital infrastructure for the public, increasing digital talent with the help of digital literacy, and promoting security in the digital economy.
