Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Wednesday expressed his condolences over the forest fires on Maui Island, Hawaii.

He conveyed his condolences to US Vice President Kamala Harris during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta.

Jokowi expressed hope that the victims who went missing in the disaster on August 8, 2023, would be found soon and the families affected by the disaster would recover quickly.

As of September 1, the fires have killed at least 115 people, according to US officials. More than 3,000 people reported missing earlier have been found safe and their names have been made public.

The catastrophic forest fires on Maui Island broke out on August 8 and spread throughout the seaside town of Lahaina, Maui.

They have been described as one of the worst natural disasters in Hawaii's history and also the deadliest wildfires in the US in more than a century.
