"Fulfilling the protection of women and children is our priority, especially women prisoners facing death row and life imprisonment, so that their rights are fulfilled," the commissioner of Komnas Perempuan, Tiasri Wiandani, said here on Friday.
Officials from Komnas Perempuan have visited Bandarlampung city to find related data and facts, which can serve as a source for a policy recommendation that would be submitted to ministries and agencies at the central level, she informed.
"This is important so that issues related to women and children in the regions can get the central government's support, both in the form of regulation and budget," she explained.
She said that her side has discussed efforts to protect women's and children's rights in Bandarlampung with the city government.
"We want to get valid data and information. The mayor of Bandarlampung said that many efforts have been made, both in terms of regulation and the implementation of policies related to women and children," she informed.
She expressed the hope that a woman prisoner in Bandarlampung Prison facing a death sentence will get her rights fulfilled.
It is hoped that the local government would support the matter, despite the prison's barriers to providing maximum service to woman prisoners, she said.
"We conveyed these barriers to the city government, even though we know that the city administration has no obligation (in this matter)," she informed.
Komnas Perempuan will continue to monitor women prisoners on death row or serving a life sentence, she added.
