By developing RFID technology, we can also prevent biodiversity loss, besides securing our food security, including meat.Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - National Development Planning Minister and head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Suharso Monoarfa, is planning to introduce radio frequency identification (RFID) tags for cattle to achieve the beef meat self-sufficiency target.
"(As) I earlier said, can we produce RFID for cattle? Later, it (the tags) will be inserted into the cattle to monitor their condition," the minister said at the Vocational School of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in Yogyakarta on Tuesday.
According to Monoarfa, RFID tags could help monitor the health of livestock, especially the adequacy of nutrition in cattle.
"With RFID, we can monitor the livestock nutrition intake. Hopefully, this technology can improve the well-being of our domestic cattle," he explained.
He referred to RFID as a solution when asked about importing cattle to meet national beef needs.
He said that the use of RFID technology could prevent biodiversity loss or extinction in Indonesia.
"By developing RFID technology, we can also prevent biodiversity loss, besides securing our food security, including meat," the minister added.
Meanwhile, the dean of UGM Vocational School, Agus Maryono, said that his party is ready to support the development of superior products that can be used to support food handling in Indonesia.
"Including the development of technology for food security, we will support it. RFID will be later installed on livestock," he informed.
Earlier, the Directorate General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health of the Agriculture Ministry said it is continuing to strive to achieve beef self-sufficiency by 2026.
It will need to be ensured that efforts to realize this goal are not limited to the ability to provide sufficient meat for the community, but are accompanied by improving the quality of community food consumption based on local resources.
