He made the statement during the National Statistics Day event in Jakarta on Tuesday, which also marked the anniversary of the Statistics Law.
"Seeing the various challenges faced by BPS, the law should be revised. This is essential to do so that BPS can work adaptively amid the changes in the data ecosystem, which is very dynamic, with a strong legal foundation," Mardiyanto said.
The revision to the law is currently being drafted and is expected to be completed before next year.
"We are trying to complete the process of revising the Statistics Law after it is listed as a priority in the 2023 Prolegnas. We are also grateful that this agenda is also included in the 2024 Prolegnas," he said.
On a separate occasion, Minister of National Development Planning and Head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), Suharso Monoarfa, asked the Statistics Society Forum (FMS) to continue to support BPS to speed up the revision of the Statistics Law.
The drafting of the revised law will be completed before next year.
Monoarfa expressed hope that controversies over crucial data needed for Indonesia's development planning will be avoided.
He also asked FMS to help BPS clarify the differences between basic statistics and sectoral statistics.
The minister said it is necessary to separate sectoral statistics, which are the duties of ministries/agencies, with BPS supervising.
