Nusa Dua, Bali (ANTARA) - An Indonesian delegate at the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Youth Conference, Nor Anisa, promoted gender equality as one of the efforts to deal with marine issues in AIS countries.

"I want to use a social approach, for example, gender mainstreaming," Anisa remarked here on Friday.

The 25-year-old woman from East Kalimantan emphasized the role of women, especially in coastal areas, in realizing the blue economy program in order to create social inclusion.

Hence, to this end, in her advocacy at the AIS Youth Conference, Anisa focused on community empowerment, especially among women.

The winner of the Southeast Asian Young Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) scholarship in 2023 stated that women need to be more involved in the marine sector.

"Women in the agricultural and marine sectors have few resources to own land because they are not trained enough. With AIS, we want to empower coastal communities, especially in the national capital," she remarked.

Anisa stated that the empowerment can be in the form of capacity-building programs for coastal communities in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.

She said this effort is a social approach to the community, as another way to deal with climate change issues that are, so far, only based on a scientific approach.

Anisa was one of the Indonesian delegates at the AIS Youth Conference, being held in Bali on October 6-8, ahead of the AIS Summit Forum scheduled at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on October 10-11.

At the conference, the youth delegates will convey a declaration that includes joint efforts to overcome climate change issues, handle plastic waste in the ocean, good marine governance, and a sustainable blue economy, which are expected to be brought to the next level at the AIS Forum.
