Now countries are tired of competition. They all want to collaborate…Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - The World Water Forum (WWF) in 2024 in Bali will follow a collaborative agenda to create equal and shared prosperity in meeting the water needs of the global society.
"Now countries are tired of competition. They all want to collaborate. At WWF, we will bring the spirit of Bandung Conference 1955 regarding South-South cooperation," Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said on the sidelines of the second consultation meeting on WWF 2024 in Jimbaran, Bali, on Thursday.
The supply of water is currently under threat due to climate change and rising global population growth, he noted. According to data from the United Nations, the global population reached around eight billion by mid-November 2022.
The threat to water will create water injustice between countries that have abundant water supplies and countries that have minimal water supplies, the minister pointed out.
Under these conditions, political decisions are needed from world leaders to support joint efforts to realize shared prosperity in providing water, he said.
Therefore, the 10th WWF in Bali from May 18–24, 2024, will discuss water management on a regional basis in the regions of Africa, America, the Asia-Pacific, and the Mediterranean.
"At the 10th WWF, I suggest we discuss water management efforts. Considering that Indonesia has just held the high-level meeting of the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum," Hadimuljono said.
He added that the 2024 WWF will produce concrete results, including cooperation between governments and between business actors in securing water supply.
Meanwhile, president of the World Water Council (WWC), Loic Fauchon, said that political commitment from world leaders regarding better access to water is needed amid the threat of climate change and poverty.
"We need to preserve water for collective prosperity," he emphasized.
Bali was appointed as host of the forum next year after it secured 31 votes compared to 1 vote for Italy's bid. Senegal served as the host of the 9th WWF.
Hadimuljono estimated that the 10th WWF in Bali will be attended by at least 30 thousand people, making it the biggest event in Bali.
"They voted for Bali because they really want to visit Bali. This is a good opportunity for Bali to prepare its tourism," he added.
