Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has detained former agriculture minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo (SYL) and director of agricultural equipment and machinery at the Agriculture Ministry, Muhammad Hatta (MH), in connection with an alleged corruption case.

"For the purposes of further investigation, the investigative team has detained suspect SYL and suspect MH starting from today for 20 working days each," the KPK's deputy chairperson, Alexander Marwata, said at a press conference at the KPK's Red and White Building here on Friday.

He informed that both Limpo and Hatta will be detained at the KPK Detention Center until November 1, 2023.

The commission arrested Limpo at an apartment in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, on Thursday (October 12). The former minister arrived at the KPK Building in handcuffs at around 19:16 local time on Thursday. He was accompanied by police officers bearing long-barreled firearms.

The KPK named Limpo, Hatta, and former secretary general of the Agriculture Ministry, Kasdi Subagyono, as suspects in the alleged corruption case on Wednesday (October 11) night.

The KPK also detained Subagyono for 20 days after he was named a suspect.

Earlier on September 29, KPK investigators announced that they had raised the status of the alleged corruption case at the Ministry of Agriculture to an investigation.

On September 28, the commission searched Limpo's official residence in the Widya Chandra Complex, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, and found evidence in the form of cash worth billions of rupiah.

During the search, KPK investigators also seized 12 firearms, which were handed over to the Jakarta Metropolitan Office (Polda Metro Jaya) for further investigation.

Limpo officially submitted his resignation as agriculture minister to President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on October 5, after the alleged corruption case emerged.
