Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian has emphasized the need for providing anti-corruption education to citizens from an early age, saying it is vital to successfully stamp out corruption.

“We hope that this anti-corruption movement will really start from an early age,” he said in a statement released by the Ministry of Home Affairs (Kemendagri) in Jakarta on Tuesday.

“…we (are) sure that this will be very influential, will offset the prosecution efforts, perhaps even the prosecution will not need to occur,” he added.

He delivered the remarks at the "National Coordination Meeting on the Implementation of Anti-Corruption Education in Regional Government Environments."

The meeting was organized by Kemendagri and the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) at the Sasana Bhakti Praja Building of Kemendagri.

Karnavian also emphasized that educational institutions have an important role in forming an anti-corruption character in children. Therefore, he said, an understanding of the negative impacts of corruption must be instilled in children.

"Our advice to friends at school, if we want to educate our children so that they understand the anti-corruption movement, is (making them aware) that corruption is something taboo, something bad and negative; then it must be instilled in them, breaking it is negative," he said.

He added that his ministry will support the KPK's programs, especially the provision of anti-corruption education to children and teenagers. Karnavian further said that the support will be provided because his ministry is the general supervisor of regional governments.

Regarding the development of early childhood education, kindergarten, elementary schools, and junior high schools, he said that they are under the authority of the district/city governments, while senior high schools and vocational schools are under the authority of provincial governments.

"We are ready to support KPK so that all (a total of) 552 local governments, (consisting of) 38 provinces, 98 cities, and 416 districts, we carry out joint movements to support, including in the education sector," Karnavian added.
