We want them to think that reading is fun
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology stated that quality reading books can improve children's literacy competencies.

The ministry's Acting Director of Community Education and Special Service Education, Aswin Wihdiyanto, noted that the learning media published by his side can help to foster the ability to read, write, and count, or numerical literacy, in children for their logical thinking in the future.

"This is a basic competency to encourage lifelong learning and also provides competencies for students to contribute to society with good reasoning capital," Wihdiyanto stated at the Strategy for Utilizing Quality Reading Books to Strengthen Literacy Competencies event as followed virtually from Jakarta on Saturday.

He noted that in 2022, the ministry's Language Development Agency distributed 560 quality reading book titles, with more than 15 million samples distributed to 5,900 early childhood education (PAUD) and 14,595 elementary schools throughout Indonesia.

According to Wihdiyanto, these quality reading books were written by prioritizing digest-friendly aspects for children, had a variety of themes and stories, and had staged qualifications.

Wihdiyanto expressed optimism that these books would increase children's learning interests and habits on an ongoing basis.

"The provision of these quality books is included in one of our efforts to increase children's interest in reading. We want them to think that reading is fun," he remarked.

Moreover, teachers and education facilitators must be able to apply the concepts of fairness and equality during teaching, as the learning process is targeted to have a direct impact on advancing and increasing the students' competence, he stated.

By fairness, Wihdiyanto means equal education while equality prioritizes fair portions in providing education to children.
