Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) has cut off access to 425,506 items of online gambling content during the last three months in an effort to eradicate online gambling in Indonesia.

Kominfo Minister Budi Arie Setiadi noted that of the 425,506 items of content, 237,096 are from websites.

"As many as 17,235 items of content are from file-sharing platforms and 171,175 items are from social media," he said during a press conference in Jakarta on Friday.

Setiadi remarked that in addition to cutting off access, Kominfo had also taken other preventive measures through cooperation with internet service providers.

The ministry requested them to move swiftly in cutting off access to negative content, including online gambling content, he added.

Kominfo has also cooperated with other state institutions, including the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and the central bank.

"We have asked OJK to block 2,760 accounts from July 17, 2023, to October 16, 2023. We have also asked Bank Indonesia to boost efforts to prevent online gambling activities," he remarked.

Setiadi noted that the value of online gambling transactions in Indonesia stands at around Rp160 trillion (around US$10.08 billion) to Rp350 trillion (around US$22.06 billion) per year, so access to financial services should be limited.

He also said that Kominfo is also working with social media companies to remove online gambling-related advertisements from their platforms.

Setiadi highlighted that some companies like Google, Meta, and TikTok, have obediently supported the removal of gambling content in Indonesia.

He encouraged more parties to take part in the movement to eradicate online gambling.

He stated that Kominfo continues to support the National Police to ensure the arrest of perpetrators involved in providing access to and promoting online gambling.

"It is not enough yet. The active role of the community in promoting anti-online gambling in the surrounding environment is highly needed," he remarked.
