The domestic sales target for motorbikes in 2023 is 6.1 million units.
Bandar Lampung, Lampung (ANTARA) - Currently, the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in Indonesia is supported by 48 electric motorbike companies with a production capacity of 1.43 million units per year, Industry Ministry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita has informed.

"The ministry has continued to accelerate the development of the electric vehicle ecosystem through evaluations and various breakthroughs. This step shows our support for fulfilling the government's commitment to reducing gas emissions," he said.

Speaking at the opening of the Indonesia Motorcycle Show (IMOS+) in ICE BSD, Tangerang, on Wednesday, he said that based on registration data for battery-based electric motor vehicles (KBLBB) for September 2023, 66,978 electric motorbikes have been registered.

Kartasasmita said that the government is providing assistance for the purchase of two-wheeled KBLBBs.

In accordance with the Industry Minister's Regulation Number 6 of 2023, in conjunction with Number 21 of 2023, the government is providing assistance in the form of a discount of Rp7 million for each purchase of a two-wheeled KBLBB unit with a domestic component level (TKDN) of at least 40 percent.

"This assistance is being provided for every Indonesian citizen aged at least 17 years who has an identity number," he added.

He said that currently, 16 KBLBB two-wheeled industrial companies have registered as program participants, with 38 models included on the assistance program distribution platform.

As of October 20, the assistance has been received by more than 7,500 beneficiaries, he added.

"We hope more people can take advantage of this incentive so that we can expand the two-wheeled KBLBB ecosystem, in line with the commitment to reduce carbon emissions in Indonesia," the minister said.

In the January–September 2023 period, 4.7 million two-wheeled motorized vehicles were sold domestically and 428 thousand units (CBU) were exported, he noted.

This figure has increased compared to the same period in 2022, when 3.6 million units were sold domestically and 568 thousand units (CBU) were exported. Meanwhile, the total domestic sales in 2022 reached 5.2 million units and exports 643 thousand units, Kartasasmita added.

"The domestic sales target for motorbikes in 2023 is 6.1 million units. We are also pushing for exports to at least match the figure in 2022 despite the weak purchasing power of the global market. With high exports, we can show that the automotive sector is contributing to Indonesia's trade balance," he said.

According to the minister, one of the important steps for developing the EV ecosystem is conducting outreach and education for the public on riding electric-based motorbikes, including through automotive exhibitions such as IMOS+.

"The transportation industry has many supporting industrial sub-sectors, such as the tire, glass, battery, electric battery, helmet, and apparel industries. Those sub-sectors can help to increase added value for our gross domestic product (GDP)," he informed.
