Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Bintang Puspayoga has urged traders at Tanah Abang Textile Market in Jakarta to increase their digital literacy so that they can take advantage of digital platforms to market their products.

"(We ask) traders here to be more digitally literate to use the existing digital platforms," Minister Puspayoga said here on Thursday.

Digital literacy is important in the current digital era as marketing is transforming and is no longer limited to conventional methods, she emphasized.

"Today, marketing is not only done offline. The world is now on the move and has shifted to the online realm. Hopefully, traders will start to increase their capacity following the times," she said.

As part of an effort to promote economic activity at Tanah Abang Market, the ministry has organized a table tennis tournament in the market.

The tournament, which is being held from October 26–28, 2023, is being attended by women leaders from 34 ministries and government agencies, women CEOs, and chairs of women's organizations.

Puspayoga expressed the hope that the tournament would help boost the income of Tanah Abang traders.

In addition to cash, the tournament champions will get shopping vouchers that can be redeemed to shop at the market.

The government has asked traders at Tanah Abang Market to sell their products online on e-commerce platforms, in keeping with the shift in consumers' purchasing behavior.

On a separate occasion, Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan said he appreciated e-commerce platforms that are helping micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to sell their products.

He further said that the prevalence of e-commerce platforms is inevitable and traders who do not switch to the digital market will be left behind. He made the remarks in response to a request from several Tanah Abang traders to shut down e-commerce platforms such as Lazada and Shopee, following the government's ban on TikTok Shop.
