Jakarta (ANTARA) - Developments in digital technology should proffer benefits to all parties and not harm micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan stated.

According to the minister, the optimization of digital technology is of the essence for Indonesia to develop its MSMEs and transform into a developed country in 2045.

"We should adapt to the development in digital technology. This technology should benefit everyone," the minister remarked during the WhatsApp Business Summit in Jakarta on Wednesday (November 1).

In his speech, Minister Hasan reiterated that technological developments were inevitable in nature while underscoring the need for MSMEs players to possess adequate knowledge of technology in order to keep up with rapid technological developments and grow their businesses.

He then expressed hope that by properly regulating digital platforms and managing the digital ecosystem, Indonesia would be able to direct technological development for the benefit of its MSMEs and help it become a developed country in 2045.

"We hope that technology coming to Indonesia will be beneficial and help us develop MSMEs and the domestic business ecosystem, so we can realize our dream of becoming a developed country in 2045 and penetrating global markets," he stated.

In the past five years, Indonesia's digital economy has been showing enormous potential as a contributor to the country's economy. The value of Indonesia's digital economy was recorded at US$77 billion in 2022 and is projected to reach US$130 billion in 2025.

Moreover, the total value of transactions conducted on e-commerce platforms in Indonesia hit Rp476.3 trillion (US$30 billion) last year, while the figure of Rp533 trillion (US$33.6 billion) is expected to be reached this year.

It is believed that Indonesian MSMEs have been playing a crucial role in the development of Indonesia's digital economy.

MSME players have contributed as much as 97 percent to the country's workforce empowerment and 61 percent to the gross domestic product.

Currently, as many as 21 million MSMEs have entered the digital market, while the government is seeking to get 30 million MSMEs to enter the market.
