Jakarta (ANTARA) - A 50-megawatt solar power plant (PLTS) that has begun to be built in Indonesia's new capital (IKN) Nusantara would help slash up to 104 thousand tons of carbon emissions every year, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) informed.

"This is a pioneer of renewable energy power generation in IKN," he remarked at the groundbreaking ceremony for the PLTS at IKN on Thursday.

The construction of the PLTS, which could produce around 93 gigawatt hours of green energy per year, shows the government's seriousness in preparing a reliable and environmentally friendly electricity system to meet IKN's power needs, he informed.

"The fulfillment of new and renewable energy (NRE) at IKN is in line with the concept of developing IKN as a capital city with a forest city concept," he added.

President Widodo then advised state-run electricity company PT PLN to lay electricity cables underground while working on the PLTS and electricity system at IKN.

PT PLN's President Director Darmawan Prasodjo, who was also present at the groundbreaking ceremony, agreed to the request.

Besides utilizing solar power, the electricity system at IKN will also tap the hydropower potential of rivers and lakes around the region, Widodo informed.

"In this way, the electricity system in IKN will be based on NRE so that we will not only produce reliable electricity, but also clean and environmentally friendly electricity," he said.

The construction of the PLTS will further complement the infrastructures prepared for IKN. The President said that the construction of four five-star hotels, one four-star hotel, four hospitals, and schools will soon begin at Nusantara.

"Yesterday, we held the groundbreaking for the Nusantara Intercultural School by Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS) and also another school developed by the Ministry of Education and Culture," he informed.
