Jakarta (ANTARA) - House of Representatives (DPR) speaker Puan Maharani along with four MIKTA parliament speakers met with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), here on Monday, to discuss various international issues, especially on fighting for peace in Gaza.

"How we in the MIKTA session can encourage the opening of humanitarian corridors and continue to fight for independence in Palestine," Maharani noted at a press conference in Jakarta.

In addition, she and the MIKTA parliament speakers discussed the issue of climate change and the global economy with President Jokowi.

"We also spoke about climate change and also the economy for which the situation is not good enough either globally or in other countries," she added.

Hence, the 9th MIKTA Speakers' Consultation meeting would produce a joint statement to support peace in Palestine and strengthen global economic cooperation.

"Whatever happens, MIKTA, as one of the (multilateral) forums, can support what is being done, in synergy with things being carried out by the governments in the MIKTA countries," she explained.

The 9th MIKTA Speaker's Consultation was held in Jakarta as a consultative meeting forum between parliamentary speakers of MIKTA countries that include Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey, and Australia.

Before opening the forum, Maharani held a bilateral meeting with each MIKTA parliamentary speaker to call for MIKTA, as part of the middle-power countries, to support efforts to achieve peace in Palestine.

"In particular, I convey that the Israeli attacks in Gaza need to be stopped immediately and a ceasefire should happen soon. We need to solve the root (cause) of the problem as soon as possible, namely the Israeli occupation of Palestine," she stated.

During bilateral meetings, she also encouraged MIKTA countries to participate in voicing the agreement on a two-state solution to the conflict between Israel and Palestine and provide humanitarian assistance for victims of war.
