We are focusing on the early retirement of the Cirebon-1 Steam Power Plant first; after that, we (will) conduct the (construction of the Java-Sumatra) transmission network.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif said here on Tuesday that two priority projects will be carried out under the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) program.

The projects comprise the early retirement of West Java's Cirebon-1 Steam Power Plant and the construction of the Java-Sumatra electricity transmission network.

"We are focusing on the early retirement of the Cirebon-1 Steam Power Plant first; after that, we (will) conduct the (construction of the Java-Sumatra) transmission network," he informed at the ministry's office in Jakarta.

He explained that the Java-Sumatra electricity transmission project is important to connect electricity distribution systems in the two islands because Java Island is recording excess electricity supply.

"For instance, (the surplus from the Java electricity network) will be sent to South Sumatra and North Sumatra," he said.

According to him, the JETP cooperation is a part of Indonesia's efforts to expedite the energy transition.

"It is based on the Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (ENDC) target and our target to achieve net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060," he said.

He explained that JETP is expected to catalyze much greater investment and support in the future, especially for laying the foundation for the energy transition, namely the development and strengthening of transmission networks.

"Without transmission, there is no transition. Meanwhile, technical cooperation and funding are needed to accelerate efforts to implement priority projects that have been identified in the Comprehensive Investment and Policy Plan document in all investment areas," he said.

The JETP agreement has been established between Indonesia and developed countries that are members of the International Partners Group (IPG) led by the United States and Japan.

The IPG countries also comprise Denmark, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, Canada, Norway, France, and the European Union.
