Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) Air Vice Marshal Kusworo is pursuing coordination with ministries and institutions (K/L) to help the agency meet speed and punctuality standards during international SAR operations.

Kusworo informed that Basarnas has set the target of dispatching its team from the airport to the location of an international SAR operation no later than six hours after receiving the report.

"However, in the field, personnel often arrive at the airport before six hours, but can only fly (out) five days later," he pointed out during a meeting with the media at the Basarnas Head Office, Jakarta, on Wednesday.

However, he said he understands that this happens because of the lengthy procedural processing, including equipment for Basarnas personnel.

He then sought assistance from the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Muhadjir Effendy to advance coordination across ministries/institutions to support Basarnas' work in international SAR operations.

"Hopefully, this coordination can help us to achieve speed and punctuality standards to depart from the airport no later than six hours (after first intimation) for international SAR operations," he said.

This improvement would be in line with Basarnas' performance, which has consistently managed to carry out missions during domestic SAR operations, namely meeting a standard of responding no later than 25 minutes from receiving the report from service channel 115.

During January–November 2023, Basarnas carried out 2,209 search and rescue operations involving a total of 22,052 victims. Of the total victims, there were 20,084 survivors, 1,592 casualties, and 376 missing.

Kusworo said that the SAR operations were dominated by incidents involving endangered human conditions in the January–November period, with their number reaching 1,268. They were followed by 718 ship accidents, 97 disasters, 57 special handling accidents, and six plane accidents, he added.
