"I am honored to share the remarkable achievements and commitments made by Kazakhstan at COP28 in Dubai at the beginning of this month, where our nation stood at the forefront of global efforts to combat climate change," the Ambassador of Kazakhstan to Indonesia Serzhan Abdykarimov stated here on Friday (Dec 29), responding to the President's statement.
According to Serzhan, indeed, nearly half of the Earth’s population resides in regions highly vulnerable to climate change, and we recognize the specific risks faced by Small Island Developing States, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Least Developed Countries.
Therefore, our commitment to climate action is unwavering. Kazakhstan proudly stands as the first in Central Asia to ratify the Paris Agreement. The adoption of a visionary Carbon Neutrality Strategy for 2060 and the implementation of a new Environmental Code mark our bold steps toward integrating green technology across all sectors.
Nestled amid vast landscapes, Kazakhstan boasts significant potential for wind, solar power, and green hydrogen. As the leading global exporter of uranium, providing 43 percent of the global supply, we position ourselves as a beacon for advancing carbon-free electricity initiatives.
Our ambitions extend to becoming a major supplier of rare-earth metals and transition minerals, contributing to a sustainable global future. We are proud supporters of private green initiatives, exemplified by the impactful work of the Kazakhstan-based Plastic Association on plastic waste-free projects.
President Tokayev, says Serzhan, emphasized that climate action should not impede the development of emerging economies. Our vision is one where economic growth and sustainability walk hand in hand.
Joining the Global Methane Pledge, Kazakhstan commits to a 30-percent reduction in methane emissions by 2030. The country is implementing the region’s first Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) to address challenges associated with coal use, aligning with global efforts.
Our focus on adapting to climate impacts includes addressing water scarcity, severe heat, and desertification. We advocate for the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea, showcasing our commitment beyond national borders.
Looking ahead, Kazakhstan plans to co-chair the One Water Summit with France, host the Astana International Forum in 2024, and organize a Regional Climate Summit in 2026, underlining our dedication to international collaboration.
The agreements signed at COP28, such as wind power projects and low-carbon energy collaborations, demonstrate Kazakhstan’s commitment to sustainable energy and environmental projects. Innovative ventures, like the world’s first pilot ranch in Kazakhstan, aim to produce climate-smart beef, emphasizing our commitment to sustainable practices.
Indonesia, with its rich biodiversity and commitment to environmental conservation, stands as a key partner in our shared pursuit of a sustainable future. I envision Kazakhstan and Indonesia standing side by side, leading the charge for climate action in the region.
Together, let us script a narrative of shared responsibility, innovation, and sustainable progress. The stage is set, and the spotlight is on us to lead the way to a greener and more resilient future.
