Sumedang, West Java (ANTARA) - The central government will disburse up to Rp60 million in stimulus funds for the repairs of residents' houses that were damaged by the earthquake in Sumedang district, West Java, on Sunday (December 31, 2023).

"President Joko Widodo has stated that heavily damaged residents' houses will be given Rp60 million for repair," head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Lieutenant General Suharyanto, said in Sumedang district, West Java, on Monday.

He informed that the stimulus assistance for the quake-affected may vary from Rp15 million for those whose houses suffered light damage, Rp30 million for those with moderately damaged houses, and Rp60 million for those with heavily damaged homes.

The agency will allow residents to rebuild their homes at a predetermined nominal value based on the level of damage.

"But, at least, those who have no money at all and whose houses were destroyed by the earthquake can be rebuilt with this assistance," Suharyanto said.

He added that the Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) Ministry will assist in the repairs of heavily damaged homes. The ministry will provide earthquake-resistant house plans to help mitigate and minimize the risk of casualties and damage.

"The people can repair their own house, but they will be assisted by the PUPR Ministry to ensure that the house will be earthquake resistant," he informed.

As of now, the agency is still collecting data on residents' houses affected by the earthquake to determine whether they suffered heavy, moderate, or light damage.

"BNPB will also set up posts to assist the community," he said.

The Sumedang district government has so far recorded damage to 248 houses in the magnitude 4.8 earthquake.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that the earthquake was triggered by an uncharted active fault.

"This earthquake was triggered by an active fault that has not been mapped," head of the BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said at a press conference on the agency's YouTube channel, which was accessed online on Monday.
