Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi met with Chinese Transportation Minister Li Xiaopeng in Beijing, China, on Friday to discuss opportunities for increasing bilateral cooperation in the transportation sector.

The minister said that the two countries are committed to increasing cooperation in developing national transportation infrastructure.

"The Jakarta - Bandung Fast Train (Whoosh) is one of the commitments realized under the bilateral cooperation. The fast train received high enthusiasm from the public. It is a potential project to be developed in the future," he informed in a statement received here on Friday.

Regarding the construction of an Automated Rail Transit (ART) in the new national capital Nusantara (IKN), the minister informed that he has carried out an assessment with the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC).

He said that the Indonesian government wants to use a set of ART from CRRC in IKN.

"One train set consists of three carriages with a capacity of 307 passengers and an operational speed of 40 km/hour to 70 km/hour," Sumadi expounded.

According to him, the CRRC will bring the ART unit to Indonesia around July 2024 to demonstrate the train set's capabilities.

During the meeting on Friday, the minister sought support from the Chinese government in inviting private parties to invest in railway projects in big cities in Indonesia such as Bandung, Semarang, and Makassar.

He also invited China to invest in the aviation sector, especially to meet the need for aviation services in areas that have fairly short runways, as well as cooperation in increasing human resource capacity in the aviation sector.

In the shipping sector, Sumadi explored cooperation for improving human resources through education and training programs.

He then invited Minister Xiaopeng to attend the Ministerial Roundtable on Asia-Pacific Intelligent Transport System (ITS) in Jakarta in May 2024.

During his visit to China, Sumadi also held meetings with several parties, including CRRC chairperson Yongcai Sun and the chairman of Huawei.

He is also scheduled to hold a discussion with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce in China (Inacham) in Shanghai.
