Jakarta (ANTARA) - Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said on Friday that he wanted state-owned vertical hospitals to model after Mayo Clinic, one of the best health service facilities in the world.

Vertical hospitals specialize in specific medical areas and offer comprehensive care.

"What surprised me about Mayo Clinic was that all their doctors conducted clinical trials with cutting-edge medicines and equipment," he said at the inauguration of the Fatmawati Orthopedic Center at Fatmawati Central General Hospital (RSUP) in Jakarta.

He explained that Mayo Clinic reinvests its profits back into the facility, ensuring excellent infrastructure and service quality.

Mayo Clinic has doctors for a variety of patients who come from all over the world, he said. Thus, the facility is always busy with patients throughout the day, unlike vertical hospitals in Indonesia, which operate limited hours.

"Based on my observations, many government hospitals (in Indonesia) underutilize their resources," Sadikin said.

He outlined several steps to improve vertical hospitals in Indonesia, such as establishing a number of new vertical hospitals in several regions and encouraging the opening of executive services in a number of such hospitals.

One of them is the Fatmawati Orthopedic Center, which offers complete and integrated executive orthopedic services at Fatmawati General Hospital, which is expected to be followed by other vertical hospitals in Indonesia.

Profits generated from these health service facilities can be used to improve the welfare of medical personnel and health workers, expand subsidies for low-income patients with serious illnesses, and ultimately improve the quality of health services in Indonesia, he added.
