Jakarta (ANTARA) - Most new Gen Z mothers want to be perfect mothers due to access to technology, early childhood psychology practitioner Aninda said here on Wednesday.

"Gen Z parents tend to (want to) become perfect mothers compared to the previous generations, as they are very close to technology, and they use it to learn about parenting, while the last generations had to ask their parents or read magazines (for parenting advice)," she said at the Smart Parenting press conference.

She highlighted that Gen Z mothers, with ages ranging from 18 to 27 years, expect to be perfect mothers due to social media and exposure to the Internet that offer many inspirations for parenting models.

However, Aninda said, exposure to social media leaves young mothers with very high expectations that often exceed their parenting capacity. Gen Z mothers may eventually end up comparing themselves with others.

Such comparisons can lead to new mothers burning out physically and mentally while trying to meet excessive expectations.

"A research by Ohio University found that 66 percent of parents experienced burnout physically or mentally due to the technological advances that make us have high expectations," she informed.

The Internet and social media also make new mothers feel they have a lot of demands and do not know themselves as they see other seemingly ideal parents.

Aninda said that a new mother must be happy in order to parent her child, thank herself for her achievements in parenting and caring for her child, and have good ties with her child.

She also advised new mothers to take rest, join a supportive community whose members are of the same age, and consult a professional, if needed.
