Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) called for an expansion of Dr. Kumpulan Pane Regional Public Hospital (RSUD) in Tebing Tinggi during his visit to North Sumatra on Wednesday.

During his first-hand review of health services at the hospital, he emphasized the need to increase its capacity to serve more patients.

"This hospital has only 202 beds, so it is necessary to increase the capacity," he remarked in a video broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat on the same day.

Jokowi elaborated on his suggestion while pointing to the fact that the hospital is located near a toll road, making it easily accessible to not only residents of Tebing Tinggi City but also to those coming from the adjoining regions.

"Patients from districts and cities surrounding Tebing Tinggi City are coming to this Kumpulan Pane RSUD. I saw that this hospital does serve quite a lot of patients," he stated.

Jokowi also spoke of having coordinated with local leaders regarding the availability of land that can be used for expanding the public hospital.

"I have asked Mr. Mayor and Mr. Governor if there is any land that can be used for increasing the capacity of the hospital. They said 'yes,' there is," he stated.

Jokowi urged local governments to prepare a formal proposal for the expansion, allowing the central government to commence construction at the earliest.

"I have asked for a proposal so the central government can execute the hospital's expansion and the total revitalization of its six service rooms," he concluded.
