A researcher from BRIN's Political Research Centre, Dini Suryani, highlighted that 12 of the 17 national political parties who participated in the election support the new capital's development.
"Based on this mapping, there is a high probability that the new capital development will be continued," Suryani observed during a public discussion on post-2024 election IKN development here on Friday.
She further said that the victory of presidential and vice presidential candidate pair Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka would make the continued development of the new capital a certainty.
The ongoing tabulation of presidential votes indicates that Prabowo and Gibran are ahead of the other two candidate pairs, claiming 57 percent of the votes polled as of 2 p.m. Jakarta time (UTC +7) Friday.
Prabowo and Gibran promised to continue Nusantara city's development during their campaign. The presidential ticket is also supported by political parties supporting the new capital project.
Suryani informed that her side has devised action plan proposals for two scenarios: one where the new capital's development is continued, and second, where it is canceled.
In case the development continues, BRIN will make three recommendations to the new government, the researcher said.
The recommendations are: the government recognize the local indigenous population and ensure their rights are fulfilled; ensure the development proceeds democratically with community participation; and make sure the capital city's construction project does not further increase the area's environmental burden.
The agency has also suggested that the new government issue a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) if the new capital project is canceled, as the IKN has a firm legal basis.
However, she pointed out, such an action will most likely be challenged in the parliament as parties supporting Nusantara's development constitute the majority.
The government must also account for the state budget disbursed for IKN and ensure the recovery of the local environment and the livelihoods of locals affected by the new capital's development, Suryani said.
