The ministry's Acting Director of Institutions and Resources for Vocational Higher Education, Muhamad Fajar Subkhan, emphasized the need for collaboration with the industry for the applied doctoral programs.
"The presence of the applied doctoral program does not only aim to encourage human resources with high qualifications but is also able to encourage the progress of the national industry," he noted in a statement from his office on Wednesday.
According to Subkhan, the industrial sector needs applied research to solve complex problems. Hence, applied doctoral programs at vocational universities can support the industry by producing competent graduates.
In its implementation, the applied doctoral program will include collaboration with the industrial world to focusing the research's topics on industrial problems, he explained.
"If an academic doctorate produces scientific novelty, then an applied doctorate is required to produce applied research with elements of novelty and innovation to solve industrial problems," he remarked.

Meanwhile, member of the Expert Team of the Applied Doctoral Program, Lipur Sugiyanta, stated that applied doctorates will focus on problem-solving design with a high level of complexity.
The output of applied doctoral research will be used as solutions in the technological, product, and process aspects through engineering and design methods, he stated.
"This applied doctorate program is expected to become a center of relevance for industrial technology," he noted.
Prospective lecturers in applied doctoral programs will also have specific requirements, such as possessing academic qualifications as doctoral graduates or applied doctorates who are relevant to the study program, he added.
The pilot of the applied doctoral program is not only intended for polytechnics but also opened for universities and institutes that already have relevant master's or applied master's programs, Sugiyanta stated.
The application process for opening an Applied Doctoral program can be accessed via silemkerma.kemdikbud.go.id.
Currently, some state polytechnics in Indonesia are ready to open applied doctoral programs, such as Bali State Polytechnic, Ujung Pandang State Polytechnic, Surabaya State Electronics Polytechnic, Malang State Polytechnic, and Sriwijaya State Polytechnic.
