"The Indonesian Language Proficiency Index in 2023 was (at) 88.24," head of the Language and Literature Development Center, M. Abdul Khak, said at the "National Dissemination of Indonesian Language Proficiency" here on Thursday.
The index value was obtained from the average score of the Indonesian Language competency oral and written exam participants, as well as their understanding of language terminology.
Proficiency in the Indonesian language was measured through the Indonesian Language Proficiency Test (UKBI), which was taken by thousands of participants and comprised Indonesian speakers with diverse characteristics.
The participants included school students, college students, professionals, functional officials, structural officials, and foreign nationals.
As many as 267,064 participants from approximately 2,293 institutions took the UKBI Adaptive Version last year.
The participants were from 28 professions, 426 districts/cities, and included foreign nationals from 13 countries.
Out of the total participants, 110,725 were junior high school students and over 130 thousand others were high school students.
The test-takers also included 5,773 professionals, and 115 foreigners from Timor Leste, the Philippines, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, the United States, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Italy, and Germany.
According to Khak, the UKBI was still paper-based last year, but it has developed a new version using LAN-based computers.
Thus, test participants will be able to take the test anywhere using the Internet. However, the system is not optimal yet.
"For now, UKBI is entering an adaptive version, which can be very maximal because it can be done anywhere and anytime," he said.
The scores and levels listed in the UKBI Certificate can be the basis for mapping, screening, and improving the competence of Indonesian human resources in any field of work and level of education.
