The Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI) on Tuesday inaugurated the Migrant Press Room and unveiled six dedicated ambulances for Indonesian migrant workers and their families.
"This Migrant Press Room reflects the cooperation between the BP2MI and media colleagues in facilitating journalists to cover our activities. The press room also provides journalists with a space to relax and rest," BP2MI head Benny Rhamdani remarked during the inauguration event in Jakarta.
He said that the Migrant Press Room is not meant to influence the media's views on policies made by the agency.
Instead, the press room has been opened to help the BP2MI to synergize with media partners so they can spread crucial information regarding issues related to the rights of Indonesian migrant workers, he clarified.
Rhamdani then expressed the hope that journalists would continue to write news while upholding the principle of honesty.
During the event, the agency also unveiled 16 ambulances for Indonesian migrant workers.
"This year, we procured 16 ambulances, with six of them to be stationed in Jakarta while the rest being allocated for other regions. This means that we now have 20 ambulances in total, only three units away from our target of 23 ambulances," he pointed out.
The BP2MI head said that the procurement of the ambulances is a testament to the government's genuine concern for Indonesian migrant workers, who contribute Rp159 trillion (US$10 billion) to the country's foreign exchange.
He further stated that the procurement of the 16 ambulances is a part of the government's effort to provide health facilities to migrant workers and their families, adding that they will not be charged for utilizing the ambulances.
