Currently, the university managed by Muhammadiyah covers 171 study programs and was deemed immensely helpful by the minister, as it supports the government's efforts in developing medical services, particularly in terms of meeting the needs for doctors and specialists.
"It's just that the Medical Faculties are still 13. So, if possible, add more. I very much support Muhammadiyah and Aisyah in developing more medical faculty," Budi said in a statement released by the ministry's Communication Bureau received here on Sunday.
According to World Health organization (WHO), the ratio of doctor to patient required is one to a thousand. And yet, Indonesia still only has some 150 thousands doctors, which he deem not enough for the whole nation.
On the occasion, he mentioned that overseas, medical studies is not limited to learning about medicine or health, but also relevant disciplines. He stated that the university, with its newest medical faculty, should pursue development so they can offer the said relevant knowledge, such as artificial intelligence, biochemistry, bioinformatics, and biomolecular science.
By doing so, Budi added, the faculty can offer a complete package that makes them stand out compared to faculties of their own kind. He said that such offer was necessary in order to be able to lead globally in terms of future development in medical sciences.
In his remarks while inaugurating the At Ta'awun Tower and Surabaya Muhammadiyah University's Dental Hospital, East Java, on Saturday, March 3, he stated that the faculty must be able to bring about the potential and knowledge which comes from many medical sciences disciplines, and use it to become the best in leading globally.
"I believe that Muhammadiyah hospital, Faculty of Medicine at Muhammadiyah can pursue the endeavour immediately, since they are new and integrated, so they can support one another, and not pursuing rivalry out of fear instead. Thus, the future of Indonesia's health will be better, and our nation can become developed nation in 2030 thanks to Muhammadiyah," he remarked.
On the same occasion, Surabaya's Mayor Eko Cahyadi lauded the university's contribution in assisting the government, spreading good deeds across the city.
"God willing, with the 23-story At Ta’awun and Muhammadiyah Dental Hospital established, I believe Surabaya people have more options when they are enrolling into higher education, (as well as) more options of hospitals to go to," he added.
Rector of Surabaya Muhammadiyah University Dr. Sukadiono informed that the inauguration of the tower is to commemorate the university's 40th anniversary.
