Chief Police Brigadier Suparno Hamzah, a cop serving in Gorontalo District, Gorontalo Province, made use of bamboos to build An-Nur Mosque on a site previously used for gambling activities in Molowahu Village, Tibawa Sub-district.
"Back then, this place was used for gambling and other sinful activities. Hence, the existence of this mosque is expected to push away, or even eradicate, gambling activities," Hamzah remarked in Gorontalo on Saturday (March 23).
He said bamboos were chosen as the materials used for developing the mosque in the hopes of making the house of worship more appealing to people.
The police officer noted that An-Nur Mosque is being operated by imams who were people previously addicted to gambling, adding that the mosque is standing as a place expected to encourage people to strengthen their bonds with Almighty God and avoid sinful acts.
Hamzah further informed that before the mosque was built in 2019, the location was used by children to recite the Quran after the gambling den was shut down.
"Since plenty of residents suggested that this place be turned into a mosque, we decided to build this mosque using bamboo as the basic materials," he pointed out.
According to him, An-Nur Mosque has been attracting not only by people residing in Tibawa Sub-district, but also those coming from several villages outside the sub-district.
He also remarked that the mosque had been receiving aid for its operations. For instance, its ablution compartment was made with assistance from Saudi Arabia, while its carpets and loudspeakers were provided by people from Southeast Sulawesi and North Sulawesi, respectively.
Hamzah then expressed hope that he would be able to continue to improve the physical structure of the mosque, considering that its thatch-based roof is still prone to leaks.
