Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani conveyed condemnation against Israel’s violence against Palestinians in Gaza at the 148th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly in Geneva on Sunday (March 24).

Maharani pointed out that Israel’s attacks have recently become more intense in Gaza.

“How many more lives should perish before the international community makes a move? Are we going to stay silent?” the House speaker noted in an official statement from the DPR received here on Monday (March 25).

Maharani underlined that Muslims around the world are currently celebrating the holy month of Ramadan which is full of blessings and embodies peace values. However, bloodsheds continue to occur in Gaza.

“The killing, bloodshed, and bombing by Israel continue in Gaza. This is an atrocity that cannot be justified at all," she highlighted.

The speaker emphasized that as countries across the world watch the atrocities in Gaza, parliaments must not turn a blind eye to the suffering of civilians in Gaza.

Furthermore, Maharani pressed for the world's great powers to use their influence to stop the atrocities and bring back humanity, so that the war does not prolong.

"In this critical time, immediate ceasefire is a must. I urge all parties concerned to ensure safe passage of humanitarian access and respect towards humanitarian law," she affirmed.

In her speech, Maharani emphasized that long-lasting peace is also needed in Ukraine and other countries, including Yemen and Myanmar, saying that peace is every nation's key to progress.

"To realize long-lasting peace everywhere, the international community and especially big powers should put pressure on the parties in conflict to come to the negotiating table," she stressed.

Maharani underscored that parliaments can play an important role in creating global peace and security. By using their authority, parliaments can create laws that protect everyone, she affirmed.

"We can also strengthen inter-parliamentary diplomacy and education to promote the culture of peace," she remarked.
