Jakarta (ANTARA) - Collaboration among all relevant parties is vital to boost the participation and involvement of women in business and politics, Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Lestari Moerdijat, said on Saturday.

"Support from all parties (is) of the essence to actualize a higher level of women's involvement in public spaces," she added in a statement received from her office in Jakarta.

The politician emphasized that increasing women's involvement in business and politics is vital to prevent gaps from emerging in society.

Moerdijat further said she believes that by promoting women's participation, Indonesia will be able to capitalize on all of its human resource potential for the sake of the nation.

In the Global Gender Gap Report 2023 issued by the World Economic Forum, Indonesia ranked 87th among 146 countries in terms of the quality of women's empowerment.

The ranking was determined based on several indicators, namely educational achievement, health and life sustainability, economic empowerment, and political participation.

As per the report, the participation of Indonesian women laborers stood at 53–54 percent, pointing to no significant changes in two decades.

Further, Indonesian women's participation in politics was recorded at 22 percent, lower than the global average of women's representation in parliaments (26 percent).

The MPR deputy speaker said that Indonesia needs to augment its export and import capabilities while intensifying training courses provided for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in order to boost women's participation in business.

She also drew attention to the importance of further increasing women's representation in the parliament to narrow existing gaps.

That way, more Indonesian women will be able to take an active role, both in politics and the world of business, she said.
