Jakarta (ANTARA) - Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Bintang Puspayoga has urged fathers and other family members to actively participate in childcare during the 2024 Eid holiday.

"Not only participating in childcare, but fathers and family member must participate when their wives are pregnant or breastfeeding," she said in a statement issued here on Friday.

She added that fathers must help prepare travel necessities for such as medicines, breast pads, and breast milk pumps to ease the burden on breastfeeding mothers.

She explained that the involvement of fathers in childcare would help ensure that the Eid homecoming is friendly for women and children.

She also asked parents to be more sensitive when children start to get tired or bored during travel.

If a child feels uncomfortable, parents must rest in a rest area, she advised.

In addition, parents need to teach children to be careful when meeting strangers so that they do not accept food or invitations from them.

"Both children and women must be aware (of) sexual harassment that may occur when on the way home. Groping, kissing, poking, pinching, staring, whistling, to showing off the genitals is intolerable," she added.

She said that if travelers see, hear, or experience harassment, they must immediately report it to the SAPA call center (129) or via WhatsApp (0811-129-129).

The ministry is also encouraging all other ministries and government agencies to synergize efforts to ensure that the Eid exodus this year is safe and comfortable for children.

Meanwhile, chairperson of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), Ai Maryati Solihah, has asked the government to supervise and improve facilities and human resource capacity to ensure a child-friendly homecoming.
