Manado (ANTARA) - The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Manado has increased the number of personnel as part of its mitigation measures to handle the Mount Ruang eruption disaster in Sitaro District of North Sulawesi Province.

Head of Basarnas Manado Monce Brury stated here on Thursday that currently, the agency has added 10 personnel equipped with supporting equipment to evacuate residents affected by the eruption of Mount Ruang.

"Hence, the Basarnas team has deployed 35 personnel to help deal with the disaster," he remarked.

He explained that on Thursday afternoon, Basarnas had evacuated local residents, employees, and inmates at the Tagulandang Penitentiary from Tagulandang to Manado.

"Basarnas will always coordinate with all local government agencies to ensure public safety," he noted.

He remarked that the intensity of Mount Ruang's activity had increased after the mountain erupted and spewed lava and rocks last night.

A Joint SAR team has appealed to the public residing in a five-kilometer radius to evacuate immediately so as to prevent casualties.

All handling agencies in Manado, including the army, police, disaster preparedness personnel (Tagana), and potential SAR teams, have been dispatched to Tagulandang to help evacuate local residents.
