Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) appealed to Indonesians to make Kartini Day become a symbol of women's struggle for their leadership and strength.

"Let us make Kartini Day not just be a ceremony, but a symbol of women's struggle for their leadership and their strength," Jokowi wrote on his official Instagram @jokowi account that ANTARA monitored here Sunday.

President Jokowi said Kartini Day is a commemoration of women's long journey in seeking equality.

The head of state wished all Indonesian women a Happy Kartini Day.

In his post, the President included a video of the process of making Kartini illustration, accompanied by Wage Rudolf Supratman's song Ibu Kita Kartini.

Kartini Day is celebrated every April 21.

This refers to Presidential Decree Number 108 of 1964 issued by Indonesia's first president, Soekarno, which designated Raden Ajeng Kartini as a national heroine and also established Kartini's birthday on April 21 as a national day or Kartini Day.
